The Foundation for Intercultural Dialogue (FID) extended its dialogue and friendship dinners to Flagstaff in November 2008. The first dinner in this town of Northern Arizona was organized at High Country Conference Center in the Flagstaff Campus of Northern Arizona University. With more than seventy participants, the dinner brought together a variety of guests from the local institutions.
The keynote speaker of the dinner, Dr. Arne Hassing, a professor in the Religious Studies Program, and the second speaker, Dr. Sandra Lubarsky, a professor in the Sustainable Communities Program, gave their speeches on the necessity of understanding among different faith groups and cultural establishments. Coral Evans, the City Council member, also shared their sincere feelings about how the dinner managed to contribute to the multicultural environment present in Flagstaff.
The Foundation for Intercultural Dialogue will continue its programs in Flagstaff in the future as well. It is hoped that the participation of more diverse community members will contribute to the promotion of the idea that being informed about our differences increases mutual respect and we can overcome challenges only through a proactive approach.
